The typical American Pit Bull Terrier has a smooth, shiny single coat that needs minimum care. Their hair is short, thick, and stiff to touch. Any color is acceptable except merle, and is usually solid.

Activity

The American Pit Bull Terrier is a breed that needs a lot of exercise. They are energetic, and if not given enough activity, they tend to be restless and destructive. Known to be intelligent and athletic dogs, they excel in numerous dog sports such as fly ball, lure coursing, weight pulling, and advanced obedience contest.

Temperament

Contrary to what they have been reputed to be, they are very loyal, friendly, and goofy. A truly great companion, they are good-natured, affectionate, and extremely loyal breed. The American Pit Bull Terrier is highly intelligent, with sound nerve and character. They make an excellent family dog, and pet.

The American Pit Bull Terrier's temperament slowly matures. They usually get fully-developed from 2-4 years. As young dogs, they are loving, curious, playful, and active. Although they love playing with children, supervision is still required as they do not know what they are capable of, and could knock the children down.

Overview

Noted for having the alertness of a Terrier, the American Pit Bull Terrier also has the strength and athletic abilities of a bulldog. This kind of breed is versatile, making them the favorite of ranchers and farmers for their courage, agility, grace, and strength. Their exceptionally gentle traits to those they love make them an ideal household pet.

Care

An average shedder, their coats should be brushed regularly with a firm bristle brush. Bathing is suggested with dry shampoo only when necessary. The American Pit Bull Terrier is prone to hip dysplasia, congenital heart disease, hereditary cataracts, and allergies to grass.

Training

The American Pit Bull Terrier has the eagerness to please, and is very obedient. Socialization and obedience training should be done as early as possible. They are not responsive to rough and harsh methods of training. A lot of patience, praise, respect, firmness, fairness, and consistency are needed.

Proper handling, with sufficient exercise and a consistent pack leader will produce a calm and obedient dog. As with any breed, socalization is very crucial. This will minimize their hostile tendencies. It is also important to make sure that they are under control at all times, especially when other dogs are around. This kind of breed is not advisable for most people, as some don't know how to properly raise a dog.

Character

The typical American Pit Bull Terrier is medium-sized, solidly built, powerful, and muscular. They are often referred to as great warriors, exhibiting great strength, agility, and grace. Known to be fearless, they will take on anything that is a threat to them and to their family.
